Police on Wednesday morning dispersed students who had gathered in the Freedom Square for a general assembly.

The students had been called by the Guild President, Julius Katerega, who wanted to give then an update from the meeting he had with the university management on Tuesday regarding the tuition policy that has caused a week-long strike. He also wanted to discuss with the students on the way forward now that the university administrators had declined to rescind the policy.

A fresh-year student at Makerere University says she’s found it hard to settle in for her studies because of what appears to be culture shock.

Joan Nakalema joined Makerere in August to pursue a degree course in Development Studies with excitement partly arising from the beautiful stories she was told about life at Uganda’s oldest university. Makerere University has partnered up with the European Union to organise a public debate as part of the activities to mark the International Day of Democracy.

The University is set to close on 7th/12/18. Majority of the business owners are worried as the students are their major clients. Most of these businesses are located around Wandegeya, Nankulabye, Kinoni and Makerere.

Shiela Tumwebaze, who runs a cosmetics shop in Kikoni says, “I close this place a few days after the campus closes, you cannot imagine the pain of sitting the whole day without getting a single client.”

As the semester draws to a close, some students at Makerere University say they will miss free internet services that they have been enjoying.

MAK WiFi has been part of students' life at campus during the course of the semester as many have been crowding around hot spots to access it for both academic and social reasons.

Staff houses for support staff at Makerere University are in a sorry state and in urgent need of major repairs.

Free WiFi provided by Makerere has had students hooked onto internet around the university campus daily.

Many students in the university are seen crowded around WiFi hot spots in the campus to access the internet. Some of these spots include Linksys inside the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS) building near the Journalism lab; near Lecture Room 6, in the Social Sciences building; MAKAIR in and around halls of residence; and WiFi at different colleges and schools.
