After Makerere administration failed to comply with a directive by the Education minister, Ms Janet Kataaha Museveni, to re-open the campus, one fresher identified as Tom has vowed to sleep at senate building today.


Tom, who was admitted do an a bachelor of Laws at Makerere said he can't withstand keeping home for this long.

A senior five student of St Mary’s College Rushoroza in Kabale town
was on Sunday evening shot dead by the police as senior three students fought those in senior six over front seats in the school's main hall.

The deceased was identified by police as  Allan Ntunguka, 19.

Senior three students accused those in senior six of disrespect when the latter rushed and occupied their front seats, moments to the start of a match that was between Arsenal and Liverpool.

Contrary to the Education Minister's statement that Makerere will reopen tomorrow, the university's acting Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe has said the council has not yet agreed on when students should report for the new academic year.

Speaking to this reporter, Nawangwe said that the official communication will be made tomorrow.

The substantive vice chancellor Prof John Ddumba-Ssentamu is off duty after losing his mother. He is currently in Masaka.

The minister of Education and Sports, who is also the First Lady Ms Janet Kataaha Museveni has assuredly said that Makerere University will open tomorrow.

While addressing a section of students at the Prime Minister's Office on Monday, Ms Museveni said she had agreed with the University council.

They say what goes around comes back around. The day Dr Stella Nyanzi, a renowned research fellow  at Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR)  staged a nude protest, she probably ignored the repercussions of her of this action on her children.

Where as the research fellow is currently in South Africa, her son, only identified as Kato, is facing the anticipated consequences of her act.

Justice Kenneth Kakuru of the Constitutional court has vehemently criticised police brutality meted out to Ugandans.

While officiating the launch of the African Media Barometer (Uganda) 2016 report which details media freedom in the country at Sheraton hotel on Wednesday, Kakuru described the public flogging of Ugandans in Kampala as completely unacceptable and unconstitutional.

Guild presidents of public universities under their umbrella, Public Universities Student Leaders Forum (PUSLF), have given government an ultimatum of not more than 48-hours to have resolved the grievances of striking staff.

Speaking at a press conference held at Makerere on Wednesday, the chairperson of PUSLF and guild president of Gulu University, Robert Mukembo said that the strike has lasted for so long and it should end immediately.

While meeting from the prime minister's office, Janet Museveni and representatives of non-teaching staff disagreed on when to implement the President's directive of paying enhanced salaries of F/Y 2016/2017 and arrears accruing from last year.
