Museveni fears elections- Makerere Don

Dr. Simba Ssali Kayunga, a lecturer of political science at Makerere has said that Museveni fears elections and that he would rather fight a war than compete in free and fair elections.

He made the comment yesterday evening during a lecture with political science students, about the challenges faced by political parties in Africa. He noted that most parties including National Resistance Movement (NRM) lack internal democracy.

Makerere students strike over increased graduation fee

Makerere university students have demonstrated against increment of the graduation fee from Shs. 90,000 to Shs. 220,000.

At about 8am today, students had gathered at the university's freedom square, from their different halls of residence and lecture rooms. 

Makerere University to meet UCC over Campus FM

The Makerere University Journalism and Communication department is set to meet Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) this month to decide on Campus FM’s fate.

The meeting due October 29th will be to negotiate amongst other issues offering a limited frequency to the radio station, following the transfer of 107.0MHz to Salt FM in Kampala.

Campus FM to get frequency

The Department of Journalism and Communication (DJC) of Makerere University has revealed a plan to activate the University radio station, Campus FM.

While addressing students of Journalism and Communication during the Makerere University Journalism and Communication Association General (MUJCA) general assembly, on Friday, Ivan Lukanda, the acting Head of DJC, said that the radio would go on air as soon as the Department obtains its frequency.

Classes resume at Social Sciences

Classes resume at Social Sciences

Studies have today resumed at the School of Social Sciences following a 5-day strike by lecturers over arrears, worth over Shs. 500m.

The strike was called off on Monday following a meeting between the Vice Chancellor, and the school staff and students representatives.

Though the lecturers agreed to go back to class, it was not clear when they would receive their arrears.

“The lecturers are going to be paid as the university gets money,” Hasifa Kabeja, the College Spokesperson said in a telephone interview.

UMTAC and MBI win the inter-institution media challenge

UMTAC School of Journalism and Makerere Business Institute have won the recently concluded Inter-Institutional Media Challenge. UMTAC emerged winners as the best Luganda News Team with Francis Kitaka as the best Luganda News Anchor. MBI was awarded for being the best English News Team with Walter Mwesigye as the best English News Anchor. These best News Anchors were awarded with a great opportunity to work with NTV for a year. Makerere’s own, Wilson Kasamba, a student of Journalism and Communication scooped the best Environment Reporter award.
