Journalists in Nigeria believe there is a lot more that can be done to protect press freedom in the country. According to them, institutions such as government agencies and media professional bodies should commit and do more to ensure an environment where free press is achieved.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) warns that lack of press freedoms in Nigeria is a threat to the country’s democracy. According to the CPJ, a minimum of 14 journalists were detained, attacked or harassed while covering the February 2023 Nigerian general elections.

The Head of the Department of Journalism and Communication (DJC), Dr. Aaron Mushengyezi has been voted the new Dean for the school of Languages Literature and Communication (SLLC). Dr. Mushengyezi polled 46 while his challenger, Dr. Edith Natukunda Togboa, polled 23 in a Friday November 29th election at SLLC.
In an interview shortly after his election, Dr. Mushengyezi, was thankful for the overwhelming victory. “I am overwhelmed by the support from the entire school that have made this landslide victory possible, and that challenges me deliver,” he said.

The Department of Journalism and Communication (DJC), Makerere University, has awarded the best public speaking students following a highly heated race.
Robert Kitenda Gobbi and Fredrick Magonga Musisi won the awards for best public speakers 2013 The Art of Public Speaking course.
Kitenda scooped the grade category beating four contenders, to take home a trophy, while Magonga lifted the certificate crown beating 5 other contestants.

Threats against journalists surfaced in the Kenyan presidential elections of 2022 despite strides the media had made to cover them in an objective, balanced and fair manner.
The electoral process was associated with various threats to press freedom. The presidential candidates included David Mwaure Waihiga of Agano Party, Prof. George Wajackoyah of the Roots Party, Raila Odinga of the Azimio coalition, and the eventual winner, William Ruto, of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
