Makerere University has received a grant worth one million US Dollars to support competitive fellowship programs for early career academic staff.

The grant, from Carnegie Corporation of New York, is to run from October 2019 to October 2021.

Professor Mukadasi Buyinza, the director of research and graduate training says that the initiative is expected to deliver an enhanced capacity of fellows to conduct high quality research. Professor Buyinza further said that the project would strengthen the enabling research environment, retain research fellows at Makerere, enhance research management and leadership capacity as well as increase the ability to translate research outputs into publicly accessible content.

During the grant period, according to a statement released on September 23, Makerere University is expected to have at least 30 research publications among other deliverables by the end of the project.

Last month, the Times Higher Education rankings put Makerere University at number five in Africa and 250^th in the world.

Makerere is only rivaled by top institutions in South Africa including the University of Cape Town, University of the Witwatersrand, Stellenbosch University and the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

But this ranking came only weeks after another one by Webometrics that placed Makerere at number 16 in Africa. 

The rankings are based on research and publications from each university.
