Makerere- Makerere University Vice-Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe has on Monday night been booed by angry students as he communicated to guests during the opening ceremony of the World University Netball Championships.

Rowdy students never gave the University boss audience, accusing him of issuing intimidation and suspension letters to fellow students over their continued stance on the state of affairs at the university.

Irritated students who kept on chanting the usual “Wewe” despised Prof Nawangwe as they put out their discontents concerning draconian policies including the 15 percent tuition increment rolled out recently by the university council.

The Vice Chancellor received a rowdy welcome as he arrived at the freedom square where the event took place, with students sending him words saying his administration must fall and that the fees policy must fall.

"Fees must fall, Nawangwe must go," students continuously shouted throughout as he communicated to the guests including Uganda’s Premier Rwakana Ruganda who represented President Yoweri Museveni at the opening event.

A team led by one Derrick Obed who was recently suspended from the University for ‘Masterminding’ strikes, tired to mobilize others to disrupt the event as he shouted "Nawangwe must go’ but the security team ensured stability.

"We have been very patient with the VC [Vice Chancellor] until he passed the 15 percent tuition increment policy and I assure you we are not going to tolerate these unjust policies. I'm ready to fight for this great institution because we might not be affected but our siblings and children will," said on condition of anonymity.
