Makerere indoor stadium launches September 11, officials confirm

Makerere University, the hosts of the upcoming World University Netball Championships have revealed that indoor netball stadium that under construction will be unveiled on Tuesday next week nearly a week to the competitions.

According to Ms Penninah Kabenge the President of Uganda University Sports and the head of Sports and recreation at Makerere University explained to Journalism @mak that the facility constructions started in July and had to end in August with the hosts having to try it before the competitions take place.

“The constructions are still on at the site but UPDF Engineering Brigade, [the contractors] will officially handover the facility on September 11,” Ms Kabenge revealed.

She explained that “I am optimistic that by the time UPDF [Engineering Brigade] give us the facility, 90 per cent of the works will be done with just a few paintings and designs left but it shall be set for use.”

Uganda will be hosting the 3rd FISU World University Netball Championship at Makerere University from 17 to 21September 2018.

Ritah Namisango the University’s senior public relations said “the indoor facility will be ready to host the competitions.”

The opening ceremony will be held at the university’s freedom square on 17 September 2018.

However some students are much excited for the competition saying it a big opportunity for them. Hillary Mabirizi a third year bachelor of business administration (BBA) student said, “Am that our university is going to host these competitions and I believe it will uplift the glory of the institution internationally.”

Ahimbisibwe Martha, a second year sports science student and also plays netball said,” these competitions made the university construct an indoor stadium and as a sports woman I feel privileged that the netball environment has been improved.”
