A group of students at Makerere University have expressed misgivings about the ongoing beautification and fencing off of the Freedom Square.

The students say that, far from making the Square look beautiful, the management could institute restrictions on students wishing to access Freedom Square, a legendary gathering point for both formal and informal activities at Uganda’s largest and oldest university.

Moses Mucunguzi, third year student of Journalism and Communication, says he reported back from holidays and found a metallic fence around the Freedom Square. He says the issue was never tabled and discussed in the Guild Representative Council where he is a member representing the School of Literature, Languages and Communication (SLLC).

Alex Twikirize, a third year student of Social Sciences expresses fear that the fencing of Freedom Square might make the area lose its meaning of freedom where students can express their grievances. He however added that the work will improve security especially during night parties at University such as Fresher's Ball among others.

Joseph Tumusiime, a second year student of Social Sciences says that while the fencing will add beauty to the Freedom Square, it might become a trap during guild election rallies. He noted that in case of riots during final Guild election rallies, many students will suffer since all outlets will be blocked.

Darius Muwagunzi, Assistant Director Estates and Works Department, says the metallic fence is one of the agreed upon activities by the University Administration to add beauty to the Freedom Square. He adds that Prime Media, a private company pledged to install furniture, lights and electrical works, provision of free internet Hot Spot and a public address system for students’ use.

Muwanguzi adds that students should not worry about the funds being used, noting that the university is not spending any penny on the renovation. The funds, according to Muwanguzi, are from Prime Media which pledged 150 million shillings in the annual contract with the University.

He added that Prime media has installed litterbins all over the Campus, is planting flowers, greenery nature at roundabouts such as the main gate, Nkrumah Hall roundabout,  College of Natural Sciences roundabout.

Muwanguzi notes that the works at the Freedom Square will reduce on the University's expenses during graduation ceremonies.
