Makerere University students are today voting for their 80th guild president. The voting follows 18 days of vigorous public rallies and campaigns.

Yesterday, fun and music covered the Freedom Square at the final rally while campaigns went through the night at the different halls and hostels.

Meanwhile, the voting which started as late as 9am at some polling stations, is moving on smoothly. Candidates and their supporters continue to campaign even at polling stations.

Classes resume at Social Sciences

Studies have today resumed at the School of Social Sciences following a 5-day strike by lecturers over arrears, worth over Shs. 500m.

The strike was called off on Monday following a meeting between the Vice Chancellor, and the school staff and students representatives.

Though the lecturers agreed to go back to class, it was not clear when they would receive their arrears.

“The lecturers are going to be paid as the university gets money,” Hasifa Kabeja, the College Spokesperson said in a telephone interview.

Makerere University Private Students Association (MUPSA) members on Thursday witnessed the swearing in of the new committee to organize the forth coming elections that will see the replacement of the Onesmus Muwanga regime.

The elected are Ronald Pande-Chairperson, Sandra Nanyunja-Vice Chairperson, Abel Rutungu-Gen Secretary, Emmanuel Epel-Public Relations Officer and Justine Nabulonge-Finance Secretary respectively.

The election that attracted a pool of candidates for the respective positions is said to have been free and fair.
