The suspended student of Bachelor of Journalism and Communication, who was also Editor of the Makererean, Frank Bwambale says he will keep fighting against university policies that oppress students.

The re-opening of Makerere University main gate will delay, because of an extension in the construction period. The works that were originally supposed to end in September will now be end in October 15th, before the full re-opening.

The increasing crimes at Makerere University is worrying police officials within the university. Makerere Police Station recorded 82 cases in just July and August, 2018, an average of over 40 crimes a month.

Key crimes recorded include theft of laptops and phones, loss of identity cards usually within student’s halls of residence, the library and other unsafe places.

Police attributes the many crimes in the university to the open access to the university. The OC CID, Makerere Police Station, Jackson Amali says people from outside the university use the many openings to enter and exit at any time.

Amali says it is these routes that people who commit crimes mainly use, making it difficult to track them.

Resty Nalinya Mbabazi, the woman who was killed with the former Buyende District Police Commander, Mohammad Kirumira has been laid to rest. Nalinya was buried at her ancestral home in Mpenja, Gomba District.

An open manhole

A second-year student at Makerere University is nursing injuries she sustained on Saturday morning when she fell into an open manhole within the university campus.

Jemima Kagere, from the School of Education, sprained her leg after falling into the open manhole just outside the Arts Building in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS). Kagere says the incident happed at 6:58am.

The crime rate in Makerere University has reduced with the increased deployment of police officers, university guards and patrol officers.

These deployments are full time and distributed widely on campus. There are over eighty officers who are differently stationed with some being static, foot patrol, motorised and intelligence officers.
