Makerere – As the world joins hands to launch a crackdown on Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Makerere University Gender Mainstreaming Directorate,  in partnership with Communication for Development Foundation Uganda (CDFU) has organized a two-day exhibition under the theme: Gender-Based Violence prevention and responses.

Several stakeholders including; United Nations Agencies, government agencies, universities, Civil Society Organizations among others are participating in the exhibition.

The two-day exhibition started on Thursday, November 29 and ends Friday 30, in the University’s Freedom Square.

The exhibition is one of the activities scheduled for the 16 days of Activism against GBV.

Other activities include; a session for students on Gender-Based Violence conducted by Medical Doctors, Lawyers, and counselors; signing up as HeForShe champions, and a dialogue on ending Gender-Based Violence in Institutions of Learning and places of work.

The Dialogue that is being attended by students and staff from the University, representatives of various CSOs, UN Agencies, Government representatives, and student representatives from 8 universities in Uganda.

In 2016, the government launched a National Gender-Based Violence (GBV) policy, specifying the roles each sector is supposed to play to ensure the prevention of and response to Violence against women.

Reports show that UN and its partners have made some improvement in sexual violence in the most heavily affected eastern regions of Busoga and Karamoja through the Joint Programme on GBV.

Despite some success, a lot more work remains to be done to ensure a violence-free country for Ugandan women.
