The crime rate in Makerere University remains on the rise despite increased deployment of police officers within the university.

People keep losing their gadgets especially phones, bags and laptops within the university. This despite police doubling deployment of police officers at major points and night patrols.

OC CID Makerere University Police, Jackson Amali confirmed to journalism@mak that that they have increased police officers per black spot in the university from two to four.

He identifies the most dangerous black spots as the paths between Mary Stuart and Lumumba halls towards the garbage pit, areas near Makerere College School and the football pitch, behind Nkrumah hall towards Kalerwe, among others.

Olivia Arinaitwe, the deployment officer at Makerere University Police Station says she deploys over 60 police officers daily, up from 40 in 2017. Some of these are deployed at specific places, while some move in different ways 24 hours every day, with some on foot and motorized patrols. She however says the biggest number is plain-clothed detectives.

Despite the increased deployment, there are still loopholes that need to be addressed so as to ensure safety of both students and other stakeholders. This includes proper management of entrances and vigilance amongst the student community.
