Law School- A section of students at Makerere University under their umbrella body Makerere Debating Union met to discuss the controversial fees increment and seek for a ‘better’ alternative.

Makerere council in July this year approved a 15 percent tuition increment across all programmes as proposed in the students’ leaders’ committee report.

The issue has however, created furious discussions in the apprentices’ community with vowing to demonstrate against what they call an injustice.

Ms Marion Kirabo, the former School of Law Guild Representative pinned students’ leaders of being influenced by university management saying “the process was done in dark.”

Students claim they were not well-versed the new tuition policy saying that it also gave birth to other charges including a 5% increment on one’s debt balance by the end of 2nd November.

The new academic information management system (AIMS) is associated other sur-charges at given dates,” Kirabo explained.

Others students say the problem is not about little money collected in the university pool but rather, it is an accountability issue that university has failed to address.

“If seven billion two hundred million was not accounted for according to the auditor general’s report 2016, how sure are we that the 15% increment will be effectively handled,” Jacob Luwemba a third year student at law wondered.

He added that the issue was not the university lacking sufficient funds to finance its activities but rather its mire in corruption and lack of accountability.
