Why crime has taken Kikoni by storm

A couple of weeks back, Peninnah Kobusingye, a student at Makerere university was found dead in the bush after she was sexually abused by unidentified people. However, this seems to have fallen on deaf ears of students who are the main victims of insecurity around Kikoni.

According to Fred Olupot, an askari with Makerere International Hostel, insecurity in Kikoni is mainly due to students’ failure to cooperate with security organs.

He further argues that this problem of insecurity is to persist for generations if measures are not taken. Olupot believes the insecurity problem around Makerere-Kikoni can only be solved through establishing a good relationship between students and the security.

However, Simon Murungi, a student and hostel resident does not think Kikoni is insecure "Kikoni is not insecure at all only that some people live careless lives," says Murungi.

Hope Mukasa, also a resident of Kikoni believes that students behave recklessly by reporting back to their hostels drunk. Some, Hope says, even take drugs like marijuana.

Hope recalls a tough case where a student was involved in an accident along the newly constructed road.
"We checked him and found that he was drunk,” she says.
Putting aside the last incident involving a female student, some other students like Stewart Ategeka have had security threats.

"I was kidnapped for three weeks but never reported the case to police for fear of being re-hunted," narrates Ategeka.

Asuman Kasibante a boda boda cyclist claims students steal property from each other. He further narrates how he helped a student transport a lot of property in the wee hours. When asked why he did this, he claimed he only wanted money.
