The hash tag for an online campaign that was launched by Makerere students has today topped Twitter's list of trending tags.
Dubbed #RegulateBodabodas, the campaign is aimed at pressurising government to regulate motorcycles involved in the transport sector, and has mainly been run on one of the world's famous social networking site, Twitter.
One of the architects of the campaign, Davidson Ndyabahika, a fourth-year stundent of Journalism and Communication told Journalism.mak.ac.ug that considering the high death rates caused by these boda boda riders especially in Kampala, there is urgent need to control the way they operate.
"While we agree, boda bodas ease our transport in the city, we are worried of our lives as many people and more so accident victims are due to motor accidents.
"We have decided to run a social media campaign aimed at creating awareness among ugandans and road users in the country about the dangers that come with boda boda transport," Ndyabahika said, adding the campaign kicked off yesterday.
He also said that alot as Makerere University, they have lost a number of students in the nasty accidents.
"About a week ago, one of our own, classmate, colleague was involved in a very serious boda accident and he was admitted. With all the we could, we tried to rescue her life but she was no more by thursday" He said, adding every Ugandan should tweet with the hash tag, in order to keep the campaign afloat.
Of recent, the issue of boda boda is becoming synonymous with death and the worry continues to increase.
The finalist also asks: "why are they happening? we are asking uganda policee and KCCA to explain to us whether the motor riders are exempted from [traffic] laws, why would they continue moving when the traffic lights go red? wyhy do motorists ride on pavements [meant for pedestrians] and go unpunished?"
He tasked KCCA thow many they are in the city, who is in charge of them and whether they registered because the victims of these fatal accidents and concerned citizens would like get answers to these pressing issues.
