Makerere University journalism student leaders have solicited over UGX one million from staff and colleagues meant to help in the tiling and finishing of the late Esther’s grave. The remarks were made by the Finance Minister Makerere University Journalism and Communication Association (MUJCA), Lyn Tukei during an extra ordinary meeting.
Esther Nakitende was a 3rd year student serving as the Chief Coordinator on the MUJCA executive before she met her death. She was allegedly murdered by her cousin, Buule Robinson, who was later arrested by police.
According to Daily Monitor, Kawempe District Police Commander Mr Hashim Kasinga, confirmed Bule’s arrest but declined to reveal where they arrested him from saying they were still interrogating him. Nakitende was laid to rest on 2nd November 2015 in Semuto-Kangave village, Nakaseke District.
Aggrey Nyondwa, the MUJCA president, on behalf of the students’ body pledged to the family that the students were going to take the responsibility of tiling and finishing Esther’s grave. He launched the drive #LegacyEsther to fulfill the cause.
The drive that has been ongoing ended on November 23rd, raising support from students, lecturers and non-teaching staff at the department of Journalism and Communication.
“I would like to appreciate every one that has contributed to this noble cause because our target amount of Shs 500,000 has been reached. The figure has doubled. We now have Shs 1,105,000," said Lyn Tukei, the MUJCA finance minister addressing the MUJCA executive meeting on November 24th, 2015.
Aggrey Nyondwa appreciated all efforts by different individuals that made the drive a success, and promised to communicate a day when students will retreat to complete Esther`s grave.
“We would like to inform the entire Journalism fraternity that all the necessary arrangements and procurements are going to be done in broad day light,” read a joint statement.
Esther Nakitende`s death was received with a lot of grief and sorrow from her fellow students. Since then, they have kept on eulogizing the deceased describing her as a jolly, humble and loving.
“She was so friendly and loving. It is guaranteed the world is going to miss a lovely being, Esther” said Ayesiga Remon, the legal advisor on the MUJCA Executive.
“It is not that we have not done enough; actually, there will never be enough if you are doing something for a loved one. You keep going, not even the sky can be the limit.” noted Aggrey Nyondwa during her sending off.
