Why Donate Blood?
According to available data from the Uganda Blood Transfusion Services, about 550 units of blood are needed by patients requiring blood transfusion every day. Unfortunately, the number of units collected daily is often times insufficient to meet the required needs. Donating blood is an act of utmost human kindness and generosity, which unites the entire humanity. When the sick, infirm or the injured in our midst require the priceless gift of blood, they can only receive it from another healthy member of our human kind.
In less than thirty minutes, a person can donate one unit of blood (450 ml) that can be used to help save the lives of upto three people. Since the healthy blood donor has on average 4-5 litres of blood, it is normally safe for one to donate. Indeed, within 3 days, the equivalent volume of the donated is naturally all replaced; similarly by the end of 10-12 weeks, an equivalent number of red blood cells donated are replaced by the body.
Donating blood therefore does not weaken one’s body or immune system. On the contrary, blood donation offers the donor the incomparable feeling of satisfaction, of being able to give supremely priceless and life-saving human gift for persons who would otherwise not live to see another day.
Experienced Health professionals from the Uganda Blood Transfusion Services and Uganda Red Cross will undertake the blood donation process, which will involve four major steps, namely a quick check of one’s medical history, physical examination, actual donation and finally taking of drinks and snacks. It is prudent for the blood donor not to drink alcohol within twelve hours following blood donation.
