All is set for this year’s Annual Media Convention (AMC) scheduled for Thursday 31st and Friday 1st November at Fairway Hotel in Kampala.
The two-day event will bring together journalists and media practitioners, public communication experts, policy makers and government officials, academicians, civil society and development partners, as well as Journalism and Communication students from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia, Zambia and Germany.
Lead panelists will include Mr. Adolf Mbaine, a lecturer at the Department of Journalism and Communication (DJC), Makerere University, Mr. Anselm Wandega, Executive Director, ANPPCAN Uganda Chapter, Mr. Paul Kihika, Managing Director for UBC, Mr. Godfrey Mutabazi, Executive Director of Uganda Communications Commission, and Dr. Maya Goetz, a researcher and consultant for children and youth programs from Germany
Mr. John Baptist Imokola, the convener said that all is set for the event. “Panelists have confirmed and we have a lot in stock,” he said.
The convention organized by Makerere University’s Department of Journalism and Communication (DJC) in collaboration with GIZ and DW-Akademie. It will run under the theme Media for Children and Young people..
Dr. Aaron Mushengyezi, the Head of the Journalism and Communication department stressed the significance of the convention’s theme. “This is a theme that should be highlighted in the sense of the role the media can play and has played in putting issues of young people on the agenda,” he stated in an interview on Monday 28th October, 2013.
Ms. Antje Deistler, the Media Advisor for Strengthening Human Rights in Uganda, a project supported by GIZ, was optimistic that the AMC would be ‘a big forum for exchange and inspiration’ regarding what she termed as ‘the need to make programs for children as opposed to those about children’
This annual event will also see key note addresses, plenary discussions, an exhibition by several participants and a suitcase workshop where TV programs for children will be screened. There will also be recognition of best students in the academic year 2012/2013. The Cranimer Mugerwa Award will be given to the best student in photojournalism while the Tebere Mudini Award will be given to the best overall student in the same academic year.
