A section of Makerere University students have demanded for the resignation of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, accusing him of incompetence and dictatorial tendencies.

During the official opening of the FISU World University Netball Championship 2018 held at Makerere University freedom square, students booed at Prof Nawangwe as he gave his speech, calling him to stepdown.

According to Davis Nuwagaba, a student of Bachelor of Education, the Vice Chancellor is a dictator who passes policies without consulting the student's fraternity. “Comparing the current VC with his predecessors, he is really unfit to be a good leader for Makerere," said Nuwagaba.

"We are completely fed up with Nawangwe's dictatorship and it is high time he revised his ways or else he must go," said Obed Derrick, commonly known as the ‘strike machine’, a suspended student. He adds that the University Council took advantage of students being in holidays and passed the policy yet they clearly knew that students did not welcome the proposal.

"We need democracy, fees must fall, Nawangwe agende," students shouted as the Vice Chancellor was addressing the gathering.

Makerere University has been hosting the World University Netball Championships, although the games come as the VC is facing increased criticism over his recent handling of alleged indiscipline cases among the students and staff, in which he has written warning letters and suspended many students.
