Makerere University has vowed to deal with students who on Monday night booed and heckled the vice chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, the university vice chancellor as he communicated to foreign and local visitors during the opening ceremony of World University Netball Championship.

Prof Nawangwe, the University vice-chancellor who is also the President of the Local Organising Committee of the competitions faced a hard time at the opening event as fuming students continued to hissing at him throughout the ceremony.

“Nawangwe must fall’ ‘Fees must fall,” rowdy students shouted also denying him audience to speak to both foreign and local visitors.

Students said they wanted to show their displeasure with the university administration over the continued implementation of ‘draconian’ policies.

“We cannot pretend things are business usual, many students are dropping out of school [university] because of these policies,” Mr Julius Kanine, the GRC at school of Natural Sciences said adding that “ as you may be aware, the VC is suspending our fellow students for demanding for accountability and what belongs to them.”

This, he said, “cannot continue like this. This impunity must stop.”

Ms Ritah Namisango, the university senior public relations officer in a telephone interview on Tuesday condemned the actions by students during the event saying it was uncalled for.

“Such actions are sinking our image as the university. We were able to identify some students [and] they will face the disciplinary committee soon."

She said that the university will not at any point condone any acts of hooliganism.

Students must know hooliganism has no place in Africa's premier university.

"They will face the disciplinary committee and the committee will determine their fate," Ms Namisango revealed also applauding the security team for ensuring stability at the event despite the acts of violence.

Meanwhile, Uganda began the defence of home advantage in style as they thrashed the United States on the opening day of the World University Netball Championship.

Uganda side dominated the contest from start to finish on their way to recording a thumping 102 -16 victory at the 3rd edition of the FISU.

The tournament began as scheduled despite concerns over the readiness of the newly-constructed venue.

Makerere claimed in the build-up to the event that they were happy for the competition to go ahead in an incomplete facility and without some of the original components planned in the initial design.

The US were also comfortably beaten 102-16 by defending champions South Africa.

Elsewhere, Singapore edged Kenya 39-38 in a thrilling contest, while Zimbabwe ousted Sri Lanka 44-31.
