Students residents of Mary Stuart Hall call for the full renovation of the hall, instead of just works on areas affected by a recent fire.

The students say following the recent fire outbreak at this female hall of residence, there has been an urgent need for renovation not only for the affected areas but the entire hall.

Residents of Mary Stuart hall say there have been a number of challenges regarding the shared facilities they use at this hall, including the poor drainage system.

A student who preferred anonymity told journalism@mak that there is poor wiring at the hall, with many sockets are reportedly not working. With hardly any fire extinguishers, the hall stands higher chances of another fire outbreak and this worries the students here.

Bango Diana, a second year student says windows in her room are broken and leak, and she risks losing her property to thieves.

Kironde Henry, the warden agrees that the hall needs complete renovation both inisde and out. Unable to recall the last time the hall was fully renovated, Kironde revealed that the toilets and bathrooms in this hall are in a poor condition on top of the leakages in some of the students’ rooms.

Built in 1950s, Mary Stuart is one of the oldest hall named after Bishop Stuart’s wife who worked hard for the betterment of women education in Uganda. It is among the three female halls of residence in Makerere. The others are Africa and Complex.

With many of the residents being government students and a few private students, most students prefer halls because they are affordable and secure.
