Police has credited Makerere University students for maintaining better discipline this semester. Assistant Superintendent of Police, Jackson Amali, the OC CID Makerere University police post says students have maintained discipline this semester with few crime cases reported.

Amali said that unlike last semester where students were raped and robbed, he received such crime reports this semester.

“Students have maintained discipline since the semester started, I have not yet received any defilement case and the robbery cases are also few. How I wish students remain disciplined for the rest of their stay in Makerere University,” he added.

Amali however says that more sensitization has to be done in order to inform the students of how they can easily call for help in case of any problem. He also urges students to always attend the sensitization meetings especially for the incoming students in order to learn the tricks used by thugs and know how they can stay out of danger.

“Most students are robbed, not because they are in wrong places then but because they do not know the language used by the thugs,” he explained.

Though there are robbery cases reported at Makerere police station, Amali says that they have been able to recover some lost items for example mobile phones, iPads, among others.

“Through tracking, we have so far recovered around fifteen mobile devises and brought them back to the rightful owners. As a team with my fellow police men, we are looking forward to seeing Makerere a theft free university,” Amali said.

However, as a challenge, Amali says that the tracking process is a probability it needs a lot of money for success which always requires a minimum of Shs 50,000 that students sometimes fail to get. Okumu Edward, a policeman at the post says that tracking the mobile devices could also require compensation if the gadget is found. This he said makes it difficult to arrest the thug as the phone would have moved to many people. Nalwoga Hellen, a victim of robbery and also a student at Makerere University said that her bag was stolen by a group of thugs who forcefully demanded to have her phone. She also noted that these thugs later scattered outside the university through the unfenced premises.

Amali welcomes the work done on the wall around the university, saying these walls will help the policemen to quickly catch thieves as their way of escape would have been narrowed.
