Makerere University Public Relations Officer Ritah Namisango has said that the University Council has not suspended the tuition fees payment policy as earlier communicated by the students’ leaders.

“The makerere university council has endorsed the extension of the deadline for payment of fees and registration. For semester1, 2015/2016 Academic year, payment will be effected until the 12th week of the semester,” Namisango said in a press statement today evening.

Despite the demonstrations by students for the last three days, the university council only extended the deadline for this semester but still maintains its policy which students want scrapped off completely.

“It is important to note that the extension (granted this semester) does not in any way change the Makerere University Fees Payment Policy. Students are therefore urged to use the extension period to clear fess obligation”

She said all students should have paid 100% tuition and functional fees by the end of the 6th week of the semester. This will still be the case in the subsequent semesters.

Current state

Today lectures resumed at the university with a calm environment. However there is heavy deployment all around campus by the Uganda Police to maintain law and order.
