Female students challenged to take up leadership

Female students have been challenged to actively engage themselves in vying for leadership at all levels citing that they are capable like their male counterparts.

Speaking in a conference organized by School of Gender and Women studies at Makerere University with a theme, “symposium of women leadership and entrepreneurship”, ladies have been discouraged from traditional fears and advised to sensitize men about the roles of women in community development.

Dr. Agnes Atim Apea, the Chair person of Local Government Finance Commission also the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Hope Development Initiative, an NGO that promotes the rice growing among females in Northern Uganda advised ladies to develop self confidence and begin with contesting for University Leadership for a firm ground in areas of economic empowerment.

She affirmed that leadership among women will help to reduce gender injustices which according to her has remained the country's greatest challange.

“A part from performing well in class, you should go ahead to challenge your leadership abilities,” Dr Atim said.

Dr. Catherine Anena, a Lecture at School of Gender and Women studies said that women are part and parcel the community therefore; their efforts should be felt in community development.

“I challenged myself by contesting for Guild Presidency at Uganda Martyrs University,Nkozi and beat everyone emerging as the first female guild president at the religious institution,” Dr. Anena said.

 Other speakers like Dominick Frezer, a Lecturer from Zeppelin University in Germany encouraged students to overcome cultural challenges which exist to undermine their integrity and respect. He praised Makerere University for advocating for Women emancipation and partnering with Zeppelin University.

adding that they also "advocate for women participation in leadership."
