Ugandans Ignorant About Spina Bifida - Minister

State minister for primary healthcare, Dr. Joyce Moriku Kaducu, has said many Ugandans are ignorant about the causes, prevention and management of Spina Bifida and hydrocephalous and yet all are at risk.

Dr Moriku says that ignorance is the reason many think it is witchcraft and therefore families do not seek treatment.

According to Mayo Clinic, Spina bifida is a birth defect that occurs when the spine and spinal cord don't form properly, forming a sac filled with fluid in the back.

Hydrocephalus, on the other hand, is the buildup of fluid in the cavities within the brain. The excess fluid increases the size of the ventricles and puts pressure on the brain. Physical signs include an unusually large head, a rapid increase in the size of the head and a bulging or tense soft spot on the top of the head.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Minister Moriku said that Spina Bifida and hydrocephalous are common health conditions among children in Uganda though many consider the two a result of witchcraft.

She added that Spina Bifida is one of the most common birth defects which occur within the first 28 days after conception during the formation of the neural tube. It is caused due to folic acid deficiency amongst mothers.

Dr. Moriku appreciated the special support provided by: Cure Hospitals in Mbale, Ruharo Referral Hospital Mbarara, Cheshire Home Katalemwa, AVSI International and Spina Bifida Hydrocephalous Association Uganda.

The principal Spina Bifida Hydrocephalous Association of Uganda, Ruth Nalugya, also noted that the condition can be managed by routine medical attention like inserting cones for bowel movement since the condition usually affects the urinary system.

Nalugya encourages mothers to feed on fresh vegetables, fruits, rice, beans and folic acid during pregnancy to prevent the condition. She says it usually manifests with signs of oversize head, sunset eyes, frequent crying of the child among others. With such signs mothers are encouraged to seek medical attention right away.

The press briefing was to commemorate the World Spina and Hydrocephalous Day due on October 25. The national event will take place in Gulu district. Uganda has 1400 Spina Bifida patients and up to five children are born with hydrocephalous out of every 1000 births.

The day is meant to raise awareness of this condition.
