Improper Waste Disposal Threatens Residents' Lives

The poor disposal of garbage in Kanyanya-Kitara in Kawempe Division is posing a threat to the lives of residents. The suburb is located along Gayaza Road.
When you reach this place, used polythene bags, plastics and other types of garbage is seen scattered all over the free land areas and the water trenches meant to ease the flow of water.
Despite efforts by the authorities like Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and the local council, residents have not ceased to dispose of garbage irresponsibly. This is at times brought by the flowing water during rainy days and clog within the water channels.
Henry Buule, the area LC 3 Councilor says he has sensitized residents about the negative results of improper disposal of garbage but they have failed to change.
"I am confused because I have tried to sensitize the residents about the negative effects of this improper disposal like diseases such as typhoid, cholera but they have failed to adhere to proper disposal of garbage," Buule said.
Residents however blame the poor garbage disposal on neighbours who do not have rubbish pits and those who cannot afford money to give to the garbage collectors.
"People with no rubbish pits and those who cannot afford money to pay to the garbage collectors are the ones who pile garbage in the free land areas at night," says Fatumah Nabawanda, one of the residents.
The concern has now intensified especially with the increased use of polythene and plastic materials by many residents here.
Namogga Christine, another resident says the improper waste disposal does not only affect the people in Kitara but also those in the nearby areas like Kisaasi and Komamboga, because when it rains, garbage is carried to those areas.
Babirye Maria, a resident who lives near one of the water ways says they have raised concerns to the responsible people but they have not been attended to.
The residents call upon the government to come to their rescue before the condition turns to the worst.
