The 10 Million Was for NRM Mobilisation, Not For GAMUSA- Mwesiga

Milton Mwesiga, the Makerere university student implicated in the GAMUSA funds fraud has defied the allegation that the 10 million donated was for ensuring welfare of the students in the association, saying that it was for mobolising NRM supporters.
The money was donated by the first lady on December 8 last year, on a day the Greater Ankole Students’ Association (GAMUSA) was launched. The Chancellor Prof Ezra Suruma received the money from the first lady and handed it over to Mwesiga, the GAMUSA president.
Mwesiga said this during a press conference that was held at the guild canteen yesterday.
He said that by the time he approached the first lady’s office, it was not ready to fund the launch of the association. He added that this forced him to change the ambition as he was asked to rather help in mobilisation for NRM as they eyed for 2016 presidential elections.
“It was not until I convinced the first lady with proof that I can organise for the party that she promised to release 10 million in a disguise of a launch of GAMUSA.
“This money was given to me with a lot of strings attached to which none of these hooligans [some of the GAMUSA association members] knows, and that’s why it was handed over to me not the finance minister of the so called association.” Mwesiga clarified.
Mwesiga said that his mobilisation was a success since it emerged the winner 2016 presidential elections.
He used the money to mobilise the youth in the West who met H.E Museveni at Lake View Hotel, Mbarara and funding tuition aid, a party (NRM) program that helped above seven students to complete their tuition last semester.
DPC Wandegeya, Sp Brians Ampaire told journalism@Mak that the suspect has been released on police bond as investigations are going on.
Mwesiga was behind the bars at Makerere police station for four days after the party members asked for accountability for the donation, which he failed to avail. He was arrested on Friday April 15.
However, Paul Mugume, the association prime minister, said that they must squeeze Mwesiga until he produces the money which was given to the association to buy cultural dance and drama equipment and a printer which were the primary projects.
“We are in close contact with the Chancellor who handed over money on behalf of the first lady during the launch on 8 December 2015.” He said
Mugume added they are taking the matters to the courts of law, arguing that the letter to the first lady was headed the name of the association (GAMUSA) not Mwesiga.
Earlier on 8 December 2015, the Chancellor Makerere University Pro. Ezila Suruma on behalf of the First lady, presided over the GAMUSA launch in Makerere main hall. It is at that same function that he handed over 10 million Uganda shillings to the association president.
The association is in its early stages of registration with the university, has no bank account and is still running on UN satisfied constitution.
