Non-teaching staff of Makerere, Kyambogo, and Makerere University Business school  (Mubs) have so far agreed to suspend their sit down strike that was started on Aug 1.

The other three that include Gulu, Busitema, and Mbarara University of Science and Technology are to have their general assemblies in the evening to vote whether to resume with industrial action or go back work.

While attending the general assembly of Makerere University, where staff voted almost 99 per cent to suspend the strike, the chairman Public Universities Non-Traching Staff Executive Forum (Puntsef), Jackson Betihamah said they agreed with the president yesterday to suspend the strike.

"We would like to inform the public that we have just suspended our strike for three months up to October, and we have not called it off. The president promised that our salaries and arrears will be paid in the second quarter that will start in october," He explained.

Puntsef is a forum that unites non-teaching staff of six public universities. On Monday, the acting Vice Chancellor  Prof Barnabas Nawangwe said they would open the university on sarturday if the striking staff suspended their strike.

A final decision of when Makerere university will open will be made today after the council meeting that will take place at 4pm.
