Government needs Sh10B to relocate Bududa residents as death toll hits 40

BUDUDA - The ministry of Relief and Disaster Preparedness has asked for Shs10bn to relocate and compensate Bududa residents.
The ministry said the money is the only long-lasting solution to saving the residents to landslides prone areas.
"Ministry of finance had promised us 8 billion shillings every year. The beginning of this financial year we were assured the money will come but by the end of the budgeting process we did not see the funds," said Owori Martin the Commissioner for Relief and Disaster Preparedness.
He further explained that in the recent discussions with the minister of finance, they were assured that the ministry has Shs66 billion on the contiguous refund.
The ministry is now going back to the minister of finance to ask for part of the money such that resident resettlement is started.
According to Mr. Wilson Matira, the Bududa District Chairman, government will give Shs 300,000 to each family that lost their relatives to assist in the burial arrangements.
Red Cross on the other hand is set to distribute relief items to the Bududa residents tomorrow Sunday October 14.
The relief items will include jerry cans for people to attain clean and safe water, kitchen sets like saucepans for them to cook, blank.
