Makerere holds inaugural quiz competition

Makerere University College of Humanities and Social Sciences has held its first students’ quiz competition.
The competition that was held Friday 31 November 2014, between the different schools within the college, had the schools compete for the top honors.
The University main hall was Friday afternoon filled with students, well-wishers, guests, and members of the five competing teams plus judges to roll off the first quiz competition of the college amid excitement and curiosity from those gathered.
Though scheduled to kick off 2:00pm sharp the competition started off an hour late but there was still plenty of expectation from those gathered waiting to see which team, some of which were comprised of their friends would come top of the challenge.
Competing teams were drawn from the School of Social Sciences, School of Psychology, School of Languages, Literature and Communication, School of Women and Gender Studies and School of Liberal and Performing Arts.
Officially opening the competition the Principal College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology Professor Henry Arinaitwe who was representing the Vice chancellor Professor Ddumba Ssentamu said Knowledge today is pivotal in fostering national development.
He said by introducing the students Quiz, the University College of humanities and Social Sciences is facilitating the goal of knowledge based national development through the exchange of ideas and information.
“The quiz will not only improve student’s intellectual capacity but provide a platform for exchange of ideas.” He said
Professor Arinaitwe on behalf of the Vice chancellor said the institution would like to see the students quiz completion grow from a college event, to a university and national level.
He said the University is committed to support the initiative by Professor Edward Kirumira the principal College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Speaking at the same event the Guild Vice President Lilian Aber said the quiz will expand student thinking.
“We are looking at how we can propagate and inculcate the culture of free thinking among the intellectuals just like the University education is supposed to be.” She said
The quiz was mainly centered on general knowledge and academic questions and some on Uganda’s vision 2040.
After the first round of competition that had each of the four members in each team answer two questions in the space of 30 seconds each or passed, two teams School of Psychology, and School of Women and Gender Studies were eliminated after they tied in fourth position.
The School of Languages, Literature and Communication emerged Winners of the Makerere University College of Humanities and Social Sciences inaugural students quiz competition beating off stiff competition from the School of Liberal and Performing Arts while the School of Social Sciences came third.
The winning team was given a UGX 500,000 cash prize and all participants were awarded certificates of participation.
Professor Peter Baguma Principal Makerere University College of Humanities and Social Sciences who presided over the quiz promised a much more improved competition for the next quiz.
He added the quiz competition will revive team spirit, good debate and the sense of achievement for the students and even at national level when the students graduate into leaders.
