A resident of Kikoni in Makindye division is nursing injuries he sustained on Wednesday night when he fell into an open manhole opposite Douglas Villa Hostel.

Christopher Twesigye sprained his leg after falling into the open hole just outside his shop opposite Douglas Villa Hostel along Nanfubambi Road. Twesigye says the incident happed at 10:30pm.

“I fell inside this hole. This hole should be fixed immediately. This may happen to someone else so it should be covered as soon as possible," Twesigye said.

It has caught the attention of the residents walking along Nanfubambi Road that this open hole is a danger especially at night and in this rainy season when the area is always flooded.

Stephen Kanyike, a shopkeeper in Kikoni faulted the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA)for doing little to have holes sealed. Kanyike says many open holes are scattered within the area.  "It is not good for holes to be left uncovered as people are likely to fall there and get injured. People in charge should cover them as soon as possible to prevent future accidents," he said.

Sharif Mugisa, a taxi driver said that he lost his customers when the taxi he was driving got stuck at this very spot. The passengers walked away without paying.

Our reporter counted at least four open holes as she walked around Makerere Kikoni on Thursday morning. The road that branches to Douglas Villa alone, three holes remain uncovered posing a threat to thousands of students and residents as most people along Nanfubambi Road are students living in hostels. The road that goes to Olympia Swimming Pool too has one open hole.

Musa Batwagaine, who resides in Nakiyingi Hostel, appealed to the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) to take immediate steps to address the problem. "In order to avoid occurrence of accidents resulting from the open holes, I would appeal to the authority in charge to take appropriate action in covering the holes," he said.

Another resident, Nicholas Ssekitto, claimed that there were many incidents in which people sustained injuries after falling into the uncovered manholes.
