Mak Swimmers Gear Up for Regional University Games

Makerere University swimming team is preparing for the regional inter university scheduled to take place from 14th  to 22nd December, 2018 in the Tanzanian capital, Dodoma.

Throughout the examination period at the university, the swimming team has been on their game, attending daily training in preparation for the regional event that brings together participants from universities across East Africa.

Kibira Vincent, the team’s secretary and a finalist at Makerere Law School, confirmed that the team is undergoing serious training and that they have also been advised to eat nutritious foods especially fruits.

Team coach Tamale Thomas told Journalism@Mak that the team will comprise of 19 swimmers -- 11 boys and eight girls. “I make daily assessment on every swimmer that shows up for training depending on their attendance and ability to last shortest in the water and that is the criteria I use to sort out those that will be headed for the competition,” says Tamale.

Tamale talked about the championship comprising of 16 events varying in the different swimming strokes like breast, butterfly, backstroke and others. “The chosen team to represent the university will be leaving on the 12th of December,” the coach added, emphasising that discipline and focus are key.

Tamale also urged the girls to come up and take on swimming saying it is a good sport.

The championship happens every after four years and the last was hosted in Nairobi, Kenya.

Team captain, Ssemukutu Emmanuel, a second year student of quantitative surveying, said that he has full confidence in his team and he knows they will return with the trophy home. He went ahead to thank the university for supporting them and responding to their challenges like the few lights that were hindering them from practicing efficiently.
