Makerere University Abasoga Nseete Students Association (BASOGA NSEETE) beat Baganda Nkobazambogo to emerge winners of the Makerere Annual Cultural Gala Festival, 2018.
Basoga Nseete scooped a total of 655 points taking the title from defending champions Nkobazambogo, who had 650 points. In third position was Kasese Makerere Students Association (KAMASA) with 640 points.
“I am so happy! We have worked so hard and for this position. We knew throughout the whole competition that Nkobazambogo was our biggest competition. This is a great win for Busoga!”, said Flavia Bifuka, the cultural leader for Basoga Nseete
The announcements came right after Nkobazambogo and Basoga Nseete had just presented head-on in traditional folk dance, leaving fans speculating who would be the winner.
The festival which was held at University Hall quadrangle grounds, began on Saturday 3rd November, 2018 at 8:00am and ended on Sunday 4th November, 2018 at 8:30pm. It attracted participation from 22 students’ associations which are some of the existing cultures in the culturally diverse Makerere University community.
The Gala was organised by the Makerere University Students’ Guild, the office of the Dean of Students with the major aim of instilling love for culture and identity while appreciating cultural diversity.
Teams competed in eight items; traditional folk dance, drama, original composition, solo instrumental, poetry, East African Anthem, cultural group anthem, and Makerere University anthem, which they presented before a team of six adjudicators.
Cultural guild minister, Samuel Obed greatly appreciated everyone’s participation.
“I can only say thank you. Great thanks to all participating associations, judges, sponsors and the whole students’ body. Thank you for participating in the Makerere University cultural gala 2018,” said Obed.
The best team in each item was awarded a certificate, while all participants were each given a certificate of participation.
Also present at the gala were Kyambogo University Guild President, German Amanya, and University Hall Warden, Amos Tukamushaba, among others. The event was proudly sponsored by Kiri bottling Company, Nile Breweries Limited and VIO water.
