Makerere university students are not yet ready to give up on their demand to have the 100% tuition policy completely scrapped off, which sparked a fresh demonstration since yesterday night.

This comes after the university council yesterday insisted that they would not change the policy in their latest letter. “Makerere University council once again informs students, staff, parents and stake holders that the Makerere University fees payment policy has not changed, that is the status quo remains,”  Dr. Charles Wana- Etyem, the University Council Chairperson said.

This decision was not received well by the students as they vowed to fight until there is an effect which saw police heavily deployed at the university as they painted the atmosphere with heavy tear gas, pink water, rubber bullets and brutality against students. The Red Cross Society is evacuating injured students

The guild boss Bala David Bwiruka expressed dismay towards the tuition policy and he insists that it is not working for the university after all the university’s service provision is not worth the pressure put on students to clear, however he still expects the “best from the ongoing council meeting or else the university will have to be closed,” he said.

Arrests

The Guild Information Minister Hon. Ndyabahika said that police arrested the guild president today morning but later released him.

“Very early in the morning, police held the guild president in University Hall where he resides, however he could not withstand receiving information that very many students are being arrested and beaten up by police,” he said

Adding; “We regret that fellow students have been brutalized by police amidst live bullets and heavy teargas.”

Other arrested students include Chairman Mitchell Hall and Hon. Jacinto Okello a GRC of School of Liberals. The University Chief Security Officer Jackson Mucunguzi said that forces are aiming at arresting all ring leaders, and that the University administration will close the institution if the crisis persists.

The University Management is locked in a meeting to resolve the crisis.
