Kyambogo University has refuted reports that the university is offering unaccredited programs.

This follows the Auditor General’s report of the year 2013, which incriminates the University for offering many unaccredited programs.

The University’s Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Eli Katunguka says the contents of the report are baseless.

“When the University was set up in 2003, it was given institutional accreditation as a public university,” Katunguka says.

Prof. Katunguka says in 2006 the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) introduced the policy of program accreditation where all programs had to be submitted to it for accreditation before they could be run.

He clarifies that in September 2007, NCHE offered the university a blanket accreditation for all programs that were being offered at that time.

He said that currently, out of the 99 programs offered only 13 under the Engineering department are not accredited by the council.

Katunguka though adds, that this does not affect any student because they have already started on the review process which is quite lengthy and expensive.

The policy of Program accreditation, was introduced by National Council for Higher Education in 2006 after amending Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act.

Section 119 A of the Act  states that, “For the avoidance of doubt, no person shall operate a university, other degree awarding institution or a tertiary institution without the prior accreditation of its academic and professional programs by the National Council for Higher Education.
