Two fourth year Bachelor of Journalism and Communication students yesterday scooped Mak Varsity Awards.

Derrick Ssenyonga, won the Media Broadcast Personality while Venescius Kizza, a journalist working with Red Pepper scooped Print Media Personality Award.

Bank of Uganda Governor Dr. Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile who graced the occasion received the Appreciation Award.

Other award winners included Aseru Sarah who won Leadership award, the Interactive Entertainment Personality Award was given to Bebe Cool, the Project of the year award was given to Mugaga Julius for the HopiTrack project. Uganda National Roads Executive Director Allen Kagina Authority and Campus vibe website also won awards.

The award giving ceremony was held at Makerere University, Main hall.  The Mak Varsity Awards under the theme is “motivate to inspire” is an event awarding the most outstanding individuals or groups in various categories in the University community and the nation at large.

Distinguished guests who attended the ceremony included Richard Byarugaba, the NSSF Executive Director, Dr. Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile, and Captain Mike Mukula who was the Chief Guest.

Captain Mike Mukula said that Makerere University is an institution if which continued to be invested in will change Uganda tremendously. He added on saying that 78% of Uganda’s population is below 30 years of age and that in few years to come, Africa will be the leading continent as far as human capital and economic growth are concerned.

Mukula praised the Governor of Bank Of Uganda, saying that he is one of the most brilliant economists in the world, and went on to commend Richard Byarugaba for job well done as he is the brain behind the radical change in National Social Security Fund.

 “Mutebile has managed to keep the dollar stable as compared to how other currencies keep on deflating,” he said.

 He said that given the fact that Makerere University, the best in East and Central Africa, and then third best in Africa, it will bring up the young and therefore young people should not be ignored as they build for the future.
