A section of Makerere University students have expressed dissatisfaction with the embattled seven-member committee established to resolve the tuition increment contraversy.

In a debate organized on Friday by Makerere University Debate Union in the university Main Hall, students accused the committee of having misrepresented their electorate.

Obbo Johnson, the former Guild Justice Minister said that the committee was sweet-talked and corrupted by the administration which compromised their earlier position of defying the tuition increment in semester two last academic year.

Suliat Kamukama, the GRC School of Psychology tasked the committee to explain why they breached protocol by meeting the University Council before tabling the report to the House of Representatives for thorough debate.

Rebecca Nankunda, a year one Bachelor of Law student said, “The Committee recommendations were regrettable because tuition is very high for my parents to pay for the next four years.”

Another student, Denis Nkangi said that tuition increment means curtailing people’s rights to education which is a violation of human rights.

The committee was represented by Marion Kirabo, who found a hard time to explain their position to the angry students.

In her response, Kirabo said that the committee found that students at Makerere University were paying very low tuition fees compared to students at other regional universities.

She added that residential houses for lecturers at universities like Nairobi were in good shape compared to those at the Ivory Tower because money for rehabilitation is available.

Council last semester decided to increase tuition fees by 15%, a position that was reportedly agreed to by the students' body. However, a section of students have opposed the move saying not enough consultation was done by the students' representatives.
