With no fly over, traffic lights or a zebra crossing, Sir Apollo Kagwa road is turning out an accident hub as Makerere University students remain at a higher risk of losing lives to accidents.

Kikoni, a Kampala suburb houses a big number of Makerere University students who either sleep in rentals or hostels in the area.

However, to access the university, these cross the risky Sir Apollo Kagwa road to the western gate. Mwebaze Nicholas, a Firts Year student pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Education and residing in Prince Hostel says the risky road gets them scared of being victims since there is barely nothing to regulate traffic. He further revealed that their survival while crossing the road lies in the hands of one traffic officer and their swiftness while crossing and God.

Were Salim, the Makerere University guild president told journalism@mak that, "the situation is an urgent one and it calls for faster action. Our students are not safe, the government and other concerned non government organisations should intervene".

Erick Tumwebaze, a traffic officer along the road revealed that a notable accident that nearly claimed a student's life was on Wednesday 29th August, 2018 involving a Toyota Corona, registration number UAS 825C and a Toyota Ipsum, registration number UAT 334T. 

He futher notes that at the end of the day, it is the students that are at a higher risk of losing their lives being the frequent users of the road while crossing from Makerere University to their residences in Kikoni, Kasubi and Nankulabye.

Anita Asiimwe, an urban planner with Kampala Capital City Authority suggests that the best way of securing students and other pedestrians is to construct a fly-over connecting Western Gate to the other side of Kikoni.
