Over ten students have been arrested and detained at Central Police station in Kampala for allegedly demonstrating without permission.

The youths, all members of the Unemployed Graduates’ Movement, a pressure group agitating for job opportunities and reforms in the employment sector were picked from Kampala Road as they marched to the Ministry of gender and Social Development to express their discontent.

The District Police Commander at Central Police Station, Denis Nawoza said that the group was arrested for causing chaos in the city and they were to be charged with staging an unlawful assembly.

“We found them walking along the streets without the permission of the IGP,” he said.
Nawoza added that he was reliably informed that the IGP was unaware of the demonstration in town.

“The Public Order Management Law is clear and as such I will not tolerate any acts of hooliganism,” said Nawoza.

Before their arrest the youths held a press conference at Christ the King church in Kampala where they announced country wide demonstrations every Wednesday as a protest against high unemployment levels in Kampala.

The detained include; Ibrahim Bagaya (UGM Chairperson), Paul Ssembajjwe, Geoffrey Kasumba, Katabula Kenneth Paul, RamathanMukuve and Nathan Bwogi.
Others were not yet identified by press time but they are said to be students from Kyambogo and the Nakawa-based Makerere University Business School.
