Online harassment a challenge to journalists in Zimbabwe

Media experts in Zimbabwe have warned that freedom of expression online is under threat as journalists and other media practitioners in the country face backlash for statements made online.

 “Many journalists are harassed for the stories they write," Zenzele Ndebele, a broadcaster and media activist said.

Media experts in Zimbabwe have decried the limited pluralism and diversity in the country’s media sector.

Methu Moyo, a former station manager of the state-owned broadcast media, and a lecturer of journalism at National University of Science and Technology in Bulawayo, said in an interview that even after the departure of President Robert Mugabe, everything about press freedom has remained the same in Zimbabwe. He said that journalists continue to get arrested, tortured and harassed despite the reforms that have been called for to help in protesting abuse of journalists.

Zimbabwe journalists decry bad media laws

Media experts in Zimbabwe have asked government to repeal the stringent media laws that hinder the free practice of journalism in the country.

Zenzele Ndebele, a broadcaster and media activist who runs the biggest online media outlet in Zimbabwe, said in a WhatsApp interview that  several laws have affected media operations in the country.
