Makerere University female students were left disappointed after they received a single sanitary pad and a pant liner, during the Makerere Health Week at the Freedom Square. The students had expected many pads that had been promised to be given for free by the 84th Guild, in partnership with Health Shuya, Uganda.

In an earlier notice by the health guild ministry, females were promised free sanitary pads during the week for students, staff and community. The notice however did not mention how many pads beneficiaries were to get.

Agatha Tumuhairwe, a student says she is disappointed about the pads. "I am so disappointed that they have given us one piece of a pad and a pant liner which can't even take one for a day," she commented. "I came thinking I will get a full packet," Tumuhairwe added.

Mary Francis Nabukeera, a student from Women and Gender Studies says the offer is unfair. "This is so unfair that we are receiving one pad; it is even embarrassing to us. I wonder why they didn't include it in the notice that they will give out one pad so that we don't waste time coming," she said.

Namuli Hajara, a student from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences says she can’t complain because organizers have fulfilled their promise. "I don't see any problem in giving us one pad, after all it is a pad and it can help at one point in time. It is better than nothing and besides it is free as the notice says," she noted.

According to the project manager of the health week, Brenda Namata, the reason behind this is because the company wants to market Shuya sanitary pads, the reason they are giving out one pad and a pant liner.

An attendant and sales manager of the company however explained that "we want girls to compare our pads with other pads on market. That is why we are giving out samples for free but not necessarily to let them go for free because they are for sale," she noted.

The guild health minister, Emoru. D. Reagan however declined to comment about this issue. This as the health week entered its second day.
