A Makerere University student only identified as Norah gave birth in the bathroom of Douglas Villa hostel-Kikoni on Tuesday morning.  According to residents at the hostel, Norah had gone for a morning shower but instead developed labor pains giving birth to a bouncing baby girl.

Friends who preferred anonymity said Norah had kept her pregnancy a secret; “she hid this pregnancy from her parents and could not even go for antenatal services. She had a few friends and that’s why no one knew about her situation.”

According to Irene Namara, the Woman Welfare minister at Douglas Villa Hostel, Norah was taken to mulago hospital after the incident, “we took her to the hospital but she had no medical documents and this made it hard for doctors to monitor her situation. But she is improving now.”

Irene adds that Norah a second year student pursuing a Bacheor of Ethics and Human Rights refused to disclose the identity of the father to the baby.

The hostel manager Mayega Douglas said that the hostel management was ignorant about Norah’s situation.

“We did not know anything about the pregnancy of this girl. We only allow pregnant students only when they inform the administration because they need a lot of attention,” Douglas said.
