Makerere University students have actively participated in donating blood to save lives.

The save blood campaign at Makerere University saw many students offer to save helpless Ugandans in hospitals by donating blood.

James Okello, the Nakasero Blood Bank Coordinator thanked students for being generous to the sick in various Hospitals. He however said that there is need for more blood to save accident victims, mothers who have given birth, among other anaemic patients. He urged students and society at large to embrace the practice of blood donation.

60 litres of blood were collected and about 600 students were recorded to have given blood. Okello told journalism@mak that the body regenerates stronger blood within 21 days and the donor gets a reference account that gives them priority in case of a transfusion emergency.

Akabwai Tumukunde, a second year Bachelor of Journalism and Communication student said “Blood can never be manufactured, the only way patients get blood is through donated blood thus my participation.”

The donation exercise was organized by Nakasero Blood Bank and sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank. This took place in the university Freedom Square.

Emoru Reagan Daniel, 84th Guild Health Minister said that the exercise was embraced for a noble cause of other lives. He appreciated fellow students for generously participating and encouraged everyone to do the same. He however called for propoer mobilization and sensitization from the organizers for more student participation.
