Makerere – Members of the Guild Council that made recommendations to the University Council to increase tuition fees all shunned a debate organized to discuss the matter. Only one member of the seven-people committee was present at the debate held at Main Hall.

The committee was constituted by the 84th Giuld to find out if the University Council's decision to increase tuition was necessary.

Marion Kirabo, who served as the only female on the committee was the only one who turned up for the debate. Other members of the committee included Papa Were Salim (guild president), Kwagala Isaac (guild speaker), Obedgiu Samuel (GRC School of Agricultural Sciences), Ssewalya Simon (GRC Lumumba Hall), Kamukama Geoffrey (GRC Lumumba Hall) and Bandola Polly (Chairman Mitchell Hall).

"It is so absurd that the other members have not turned up, yet they were there as the policy was being passed,” said Sarah Ntabadde, a student from School of Social Sciences.

"The absentees didn't give clear reasons as to why they didn't turn up for the debate session," said Javia Natukunda, a second year student from the School of Law. Attempts to get a comment from the members absent were futile.

The debate was organized to discuss the recent 15% fees increment by the university, with the approval of the seven-member committee of the guild. The decision however remains controversial, as the process through which the decision was reached being questioned.
