The government has in a surprise U-turn allowed organisers of highly advertised festival, Nyege Nyege, taking place in Jinja this weekend "to go ahead with preparations" for the four-day event.

The revelation has been made the Government spokesperson Mr Ofwono Opondo who confirmed speaking to Internal Affairs minister, Gen Jeje Odong.

“ [I have] just spoken to Internal Affairs Minister Gen. Jeje Odongo, he states Nyege Nyege organizers should go ahead with prepations for their function. Further review meeting involving all stakeholders is scheduled for 10.00am tomorrow [Wednesday],” Ofwono tweeted.

Earlier, the ethics and integrity minister Rev Fr Simon Lokodo had written to the Internal Affairs Minister asking to halt the festival which he deemed a ‘threat to national integrity’

"We have information that open sex, noise, homosexuality, LGBTI will be part of this event. MTN Nyege Nyege will not be accepted because these people will be openly saying such statuses. This year, it will not take place," the minister told reporters at the media centre.

Festival organisers and sponsors MTN Uganda  had vowed to continue the festival also arguing the public to disregard the gay claims made by minister Lokodo.
