The famous Makerere-affiliated girls’ hostel Pinto’s has been put on sale after the owner failed to clear a loan of about USD 2 million.

According to Musa Mayanja, the manager of the hostel, the three-storey  structure located in Kikoni is owned by Sir Pinto Distributors Ltd (SPDL) who acquired a loan from a yet to be identified lender  and failed to clear the it within the agreed period of time.

In 2010, when Makerere University council agreed to put up branches up country, it probably did not foresee that the western campus that was based in Fort Portal, Kabarole District, would soon be closed to several constraints.

The campus was in April this year indefinitely closed by the same council that brought about its birth six years ago.

According to Prof Ali Twaha, the then acting vice chancellor, the move to start the campus followed several pleas from the western region leaders and community who requested to have a Makerere university branch in the area.

Makerere University Academic Staff Association (Muasa) yesterday gave the university council an ultimatum of one month to have fully cleared their incentive arrears amounting to Shs 15 billion.

While holding their general assembly at the College of Education and External Studies (Cees), they also resolved that their incentives should not be reduced by 75 per cent as the university council had proposed in a letter they received earlier this month.
