Students taking evening lectures in fear of insecurity

A Second year girl was last night attacked and assaulted before her phone and jumper were taken away by thugs.

Noor Namanda from School of Education was attacked while on her way back to hostel from evening lectures, beaten up and lost phone and a jacket to the thieves as she tried to flee.

“While on my way back to hostel in Kikoni, two boys emerged from darkness behind Lumumba Hall, pounced on me and started beating me until I surrendered my phone and jumper,” narrated Namanda.

This is not the first case of assault to students while at campus. On 19th July this year, The Daily Monitor newspaper reported that an unidentified girl had been raped, killed and dumped behind Livingstone Hall of residence.

Okeya John, a student and a resident in Kikumi-kikumi says that there have been tendencies of drug abusers targeting innocent students especially girls and forcing them to surrender their phones and other valuables. He added that thieves hide in dark areas within and around the University campus and they steal from students.

The University chief security officer, A.S.P, Enoch Abeine encouraged students to move in groups so as to reduce risks of assault and sexual harassment.

Meanwhile, the University management has identified and ring fenced deadly spots especially those near Kikumi-kikumi to curb down the vice of attacking students. However,  most areas within Campus remain in total darkness.
