Despite the recent expansion of the Makerere University Main Library, Students, still fail to get places where they can read for their end of semester examinations.

Stranded students now opt to read from the Freedom Square, as a new reading place because they lack reading places in the Main Library.

This has been attributed to the growing student population in the university.

Sandra Namuddu, a third year student from the School of Social Sciences prefers the Freedom Square to the Main Library. "Because of too much commotion and congestion in the library, I read from the freedom square because it is a more convenient place for me to read my books," she said.

Peter Kaggwa, a second year student pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Education syas group discussions would rather be done in a more convenient space like the Freedom Square, than the congested library.

Jonah Ssekatawa, a first year student from the Law School, the Main Library is too small for the students’ population."All students cannot fit in the library. This is why I normally come early so that I get where to read from," he said.

Mariam Naluggwa, a third year student of Medicine said that she chose the Freedom Square because she can hardly concentrate when the Main Library is full.

"First of all, entering the library involves struggle as students always push each other in lines. Also, I can hardly concentrate from there because students are too congested," she adds.

However, Rachael Nakalembe, the head of reference and circulation in the Main Library said that library users who come early benefit the most. "The library caters for various groups of people including the external users, lecturers, as well as the students. Therefore, the services cannot be enough for all of them."
