Residents of Kitara Rise in Kanyanya, a residential suburb in Kampala have raised concerns about the dark roads which have seemingly imposed a great threat on their lives.

Kanyanya is a suburb of Kampala district located along Gayaza road in Kawempe Division.

Naggita Jovia, one of the residents of Kanyanya who normally uses the road at night says that the roads are always dark with no street lights, which is dangerous to the road users at night.

"I always use this road at night but it is always dark and one can hardly see where she or he is heading to," she narrates.

In an interaction with some of other residents who use these roads, they only survive with the lights supplied by the road side houses at night.

"I walk by the light given out by the road side houses during night hours." Mutesi  Aishah, a resident in Kitara explained.

On a visit to this place, darkness is all over and without a torch light or security lights by the road side houses, one can hardly move a long distance without knocking a hump or falling into a pothole unknowingly.

Despite the complaints made by the residents in this place, the local council has so far not yet attended to any of them. The complaints have now accumulated in number.

Ronald Ssebugwawo, chairman of Kanyanya-Kitara, says that they are still working on other projects within the area like road construction which is still going on but they are to handle it after the ongoing projects.

"As you can see we are still on road construction, but we are handling that next," he said.

Robert Mukasa, one of the residents who lives along one of the roads, says that if they do not install street lights along these roads, locals stand a big risk of being attacked by robbers who might take advantage of the darkness.

"Our houses stand a big risk of theft and robbery since the roads are dark and no one can clearly be seen breaking into houses," he explained.

The residents call upon the local council of the area to work on their issues before their lives are affected.

Kanyanya-Kitara is not the only area affected by such problems but also the neighbouring roads connecting to different areas like Gayaza-Kawempe-Mbogo road.
