Makerere University has suspended eight students for engaging in the Saturday 5th March, 2022 clash between residents of Mitchell and University halls. This according to letters seen by this website, signed by the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Henry Alinaitwe.
The suspended students include Collin Chemonges Asiimwe, David Mutesasira, Muhammadi Luzze, Zekelea Ssengendo, Joel Mujulizi, Kizito Luzige, Yunus Lubega and Raymond Ochieng.
According to the university management, the eight students have been suspended with immediate effect as they acted against the Makerere University students regulations 8 (2) (a) and (b) and 8 (9) (b) (i), (viii), (ix), (x), and (xi).
“The students whose letters appear below have been suspended with immediate effect until further notice, and subject to the outcome of the investigations.” The university said in a tweet on its official page.
As one of the suspension letters reads, the students are accused of indicsipline including engaging in acts of hooliganism, mounting roadblocks on campus, throwing stones at buildings, and lighting fires on signposts and roads on University campus leading to the destruction of university property.
However, Mr Adupa James, the chairman Mitchell hall said the students were unlawfully suspended as they did not engage in violent acts but were only coming from night clubs.
“These our colleagues were returning from clubs in the city suburbs. We wonder if its an offence to go to the club,” part of Adupa’s response reads.
The university management said in a letter dated 7th March, 2022 that residents from both halls broke over 150 window panes across 91 windows at both Mitchell and University halls and staged illegal roadblocks in the wee hours of the night.
